This venue, the Bluegrass Renaissance, was a great local spot on Bardstown Road, in Louisville. A few months later, they changed their name to the Mason Jar. Newgrass Revival played this venue frequently, often for 3 nights or more. I saw them playing there dozens of times. Today, the same proprietors have a similar venue named Rudyard Kipling, at a different location.
The band was able to deliver pretty good sound to their audiences. They were using La Scala speakers for the main PA. Courtney Johnson's wife, Hazel, ran the sound and did the mix. She was good. She would quickly restring and tune NGR's instruments, after a broken string on stage. On this night in September 1975, I showed up early. My Nakamichi 550 portable tape deck was outside in my VW beetle. Hazel permitted me to assist them setting up the sound system. When we were done setting up, we did the final soundcheck. Then I asked Hazel if I could tape them. Let's thank Hazel and the boys for giving me the SBD patch to record from.
